ADD/ADHD Counseling
We all have heard of kids who can’t sit still, who never seem to listen, who blurt out inappropriate comments, or don’t follow instructions no matter how clearly you present them.
Adults can also experience the same behaviors. We now know that it is not “something you grow out of”. ADHD makes it difficult for a person to inhibit their spontaneous responses, including everything from movement, to speech, to assertiveness. ADHD can cause problems if left untreated. Adults who can’t focus or control themselves may have difficulties in relationships at home and at work. These frustrations can lead to low self-esteem as well as friction for those around you.
Adult ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition that affects a person’s ability to focus, stay organized, and control impulses. Please visit our detailed Blog post on diagnosing ADHD.
Here’s a simple overview of how ADHD is identified and the types of ADHD:
Note: the diagnosis “ADD” is no longer used and all three types are different forms of ADHD.
Signs of Inattention:
- Often makes careless mistakes or overlooks details.
- Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities.
- Avoids or dislikes tasks that require long periods of mental effort.
- Frequently loses things needed for tasks and activities.
- Easily distracted by unrelated thoughts or stimuli.
Signs of Hyperactivity and Impulsivity:
- Fidgets or squirms in seat.
- Often gets up when staying seated is expected.
- Feels “on the go” or acts as if “driven by a motor.”
- Talks excessively.
- Interrupts or intrudes on others.
Understanding these signs and types can help in recognizing ADHD and seeking appropriate help.
